What Is Occam’s Razor? 🪒🧖‍♂️

Occam’s Razor (also known as the “Law of Parsimony”) is a philosophical principle and problem-solving tool. In philosophy, a razor is a tool that’s used to “shave off” improbable solutions for a given problem. Occam’s Razor ****is the most famous, and goes like this:

Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.

Put simply, Occam’s Razor is the idea that you should always prefer a simple explanation to a complex one. Keep in mind, this is a heuristic. This means it’s not always accurate, but it’s true enough of the time to make it a useful mental shortcut.

There is a famous quote from Einstein that’s been paraphrased into this: “everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”

  2. Easier to troubleshoot
  3. Easier to manage
  4. Easier to optimize
  5. Easier to scale
